  15. Effect algebras and unsharp quantum logics.D. J. Foulis & M. K. Bennett - 1994 - Foundations of Physics 24 (10):1331-1352.
The effects in a quantum-mechanical system form a partial algebra and a partially ordered set which is the prototypical example of the effect algebras discussed in this paper. The relationships among effect algebras and such structures as orthoalgebras and orthomodular posets are investigated, as are morphisms and group- valued measures (or charges) on effect algebras. It is proved that there is a universal group for every effect algebra, as well as a universal vector space over an arbitrary field.

    French Cinema.Allen J. Scott - 2000 - Theory, Culture and Society 17 (1):1-38.
The article opens with a brief discussion of the cultural economy of cities. A framework for investigating this phenomenon is then proposed, paying special attention to the interconnections between the system of production, its geographic milieu and the logistics of distribution. An overview of the structure and logic of the French film industry is laid out in which the fragmentation of production activities and labor markets is stressed. The policy system governing the French film industry is described in detail, and (...)

    When women aren't enough.Allen J. Frantzen - 1993 - Speculum 68 (2):445-471.
If writing about women was once an innovation, it is now an imperative. Very rare only two short decades ago, feminist scholarship today pervades the disciplines of art, history, law, literature, and religion. This volume, as probably every reader will have observed, is another sign that feminist studies, if not the norm, are now so regular an exception to it that they have redefined the norm. This volume is a sign of something else, which is that feminism has made a (...)

    The Almohad Mecca: Locating Igli and the Cave of Ibn Tumart.Allen J. Fromherz - 2005 - Al-Qantara 26 (1):175-190.

The new framework for understanding placental mammal evolution.Robert J. Asher, Nigel Bennett & Thomas Lehmann - 2009 - Bioessays 31 (8):853-864.
An unprecedented level of confidence has recently crystallized around a new hypothesis of how living placental mammals share a pattern of common descent. The major groups are afrotheres (e.g., aardvarks, elephants), xenarthrans (e.g., anteaters, sloths), laurasiatheres (e.g., horses, shrews), and euarchontoglires (e.g., humans, rodents). Compared with previous hypotheses this tree is remarkably stable; however, some uncertainty persists about the location of the placental root, and (for example) the position of bats within laurasiatheres, of sea cows and aardvarks within afrotheres, and (...)

  40. Between Retribution and Restoration: Justice and the TRC.J. Allen - 2001 - South African Journal of Philosophy 20 (2):1-20.
How may a society, in a morally defensible way, confront a past of injustice and suffering, and seek to break the spell of violence and disregard for human life? I begin by demonstrating the relevance of this question to the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and I draw attention to André du Toit’s longstanding interest in ways in which truth commissions may function to consolidate political change. In the second section of the article, I argue that truth commissions should (...)

    A History of Political Thought in the 16th Century.J. W. Allen - 2009 - Routledge.
This presentation of the main phases and features of political thought in the sixteenth century is based on an exhaustive study of contemporary writings in Latin, English, French, German and Italian. The book is divided into four parts. The first part deals with the new thought of Protestantism. The rest describes special ideas that emerged in England, France and Italy.
